John, I have enjoyed your well written and thoughtful articles since you started your blog. I disagree with you some of the time but know you put thought and effort into what you write.

There is a world of difference between where you got educated in construction and where I got educated, but I think where you seem to struggle in understanding the dynamics of the business, those of us who came up through the ranks find nothing unusual in what you find as disappointing and unfair.

The bidding process has always been contentious and the best bid is not always the best contractor, but money is almost always made. As far as winning a bid for wages, you either do that or move on to greener pastures, what your bidding is not your standards but the standards acceptable to the developers of the project.

For a new company to bid with a 5% markup is pretty scary business and I would have trouble sleeping knowing something as simple as another contractors mishap might derail my entire markup.

Thanks the author for article. The main thing do not forget about users, and continue in the same spirit.
